Reid's Previous Publications and Brief History

Panthea Reid is the author of Art and Affection: A Life of Virginia Woolf (Oxford, 1996) and of William Faulkner: The Abstract and the Actual (LSU, 1974). She edited Conversations with Ellen Douglas (Mississippi, 2000) and The Art of Walker Percy (LSU, 1979). Her memoir on Faulkner and her father, John Reid, is titled “William Faulkner’s ‘War Wound’: Reflections on Writing and Doing, Knowing and Remembering” (Virginia Quarterly, fall, 1998). Her illustrated “Tillie Olsen: Utterances on the Side of Life” (DoubleTake, spring 2000) focused on Olsen’s life-long commitment to Human Rights. Reid is the author of numerous scholarly essays appearing in the Journal of Modern Literature, Biography, the Southern Review, English Literature in Transition, The Faulkner Journal, the Virginia Woolf Miscellany, and other journals. Her reviews have appeared in the Times Literary Supplement, American Literature, Virginia Quarterly Review, South Central Review, Studies in the Novel, and others. Reid is the author of the Virginia Woolf and Tillie Olsen entries for the new Encyclopaedia Britannica.

Reid holds a Ph.D from the University of North Carolina (1971). She received a fellowship in 2000 from the National Endowment for the Humanities to edit the letters of Tillie Olsen and to write Olsen’s biography. She has received other grants from NEH, from the Council for the International Exchange of Scholars, from the Fulbright Commission, and from Louisiana State University. She is a member of Phi Beta Kappa.

Having retired in 2001, Reid is Professor of English Emerita at LSU. In 2001-2002, she was Visiting Research Collaborator at Princeton University. She lives with her husband, John Irwin Fischer, an expert on the poetry of Jonathan Swift, in Princeton, NJ.
